5 ways to ditch the AC (as much as possible) this summer and having an eco friendly summer

The scorching heat right now makes the thought of spending your afternoon lounging in an air conditioned room very appealing to all of us.

Unfortunately, the harmful effects of Air conditioners is something that most of us are aware of and cannot be overlooked 

A typical room air conditioner, for example, uses 10-20 times as much electricity as a ceiling fan. Air conditioning also means more refrigerants, which in turn leads to potentially higher greenhouse gases.

Although we do understand that cutting the use of air conditioning completely out of your life is something that is very difficult, we do believe that through certain efforts, the use for the same can be minimised 

Here are the top 5 ways to keep yourself cool this summer while also making sure the planet keep its cool too..

1. Restrain the use of appliances that emit heat 

A lot of times, we don’t realise that there are so many appliances in our homes that emit heat and in turn end up making our surroundings warmer

Avoid use of grills indoors, avoid using the stove for long durations and try to use equipment’s like grills, roasts, etc in the outdoors

Instead of drying your dishes in the dishwasher, let your dishes to air dry

Instead of blow drying your hair, give your hair a break and let it air dry too.

Set up a clothesline for clothes to dry outdoors rather than using the dryer. The added benefit from doing this is that you’ll enjoy that fresh outdoor scent that can’t be replicated by a bottle! If you add a little white vinegar to your wash, your clothes will air-dry soft, not stiff.

An inappropriate diet during the summer is bound to make your body temperature rise and makes you feel much hotter, thus wanting you to turn on the AC more often. 

Try foods that regulate your body temperature and will keep you hydrated 

Raw foods like melons, cucumbers etc have an inherent cooling nature.

Also do not forget to fill your body with refreshing fluids during the summer, and to drink your water.

As a result this will also minimise your use of stove tops and ovens.

3. Keep your pulse points cool 

Keeping your pulse points cool is an age-old practice followed all around the world to beat the heat. For example, it is common in hot countries for people to cover their necks with scarves not only to guard themselves against the sun, but also because the neck contains vital pulse points.

Pulse points are areas on the body where you can feel your pulse because your blood vessels are close to the surface of your skin. Because they are so close, you can cool off your blood and body temperature by getting the area in contact with cool water.

Your neck, wrists, ankles, inside of the knees and elbows, inner thighs, temples and forehead are all pulse points that relay the sensation of coolness to the rest of your body when they are cooled!

4. Opt for cool more comfortable clothing 

It is of utmost importance to make the right clothing choice during the summers.

Your clothes can definitely determine your body temperature and whether it makes you feel hot or cold.

Choosing breathable fabrics like cotton, hemp, linens etc over other fabrics like spandex, polyester, nylon can make a significant difference.

It is also important that you choose the right colours to compliment the summer like pastels, light colours and avoid heavily dyed vibrant hues.

5. Take advantage of the outdoors 

Many people think that staying indoors and away from the sun is the best way to stay cool in the summer times, however to the contrary, it is proven that indoor spaces become more humid and closed spaces can have much more heat trapped in them.

Try to spend your time outdoors and breathe in the natural air, even in summer.

Take advantage of public spaces, like parks, beaches, etc instead of staying holed up indoors. Though so not forget to always put your sunscreen on.
